Been there, did that first.  I know what to check for the S-Meter zero, and
it's been suggested that this was one of the problem areas of the radio (or
at least some of them).  I didn't have a problem with my original SB-102,
but this one apparently is exhibiting the trait.  On some radios it appears
that it may have been impossible to get the S-meter zeroed.

The receive audio distortion has been traced by at least one person to
inadequate BFO injection in the product detector.  There's a suggestion to
increase the coupling cap from the carrier oscillator to the detector from
12pF to 100pF, which I will try as soon as the bench is clear enough to get
the radio up there.

Distortion in transmit audio is another issue, and I'm planning a
stage-by-stage scope trace to see if anything obvious shows up.
