I acquired a Heathkit AT-1 awhile ago and only had a chance to test it
briefly at that time.
The other day I decided it was time to actually put it on the air (-:
Connected and tuned the antenna, put the rig on standby and started tuning
around for someone to call and after a few minutes smoke started literally
poring out of the rig. I of course immediately turned it off and unplugged
it.
I opened up the rig and discovered that a 100uf 450 Volt capacitor had
melted. This capacitor is apparently a modification to the rig in that it's
not shown in the schematic or assembly manual.
It is connected between one leg of the filter choke and ground. Does anyone
know about this modification.
I took it out of the circuit, made sure the filter choke was wired properly
according to the manual. I then turned the rig on and it seems to work fine.
Any thoughts or info would be appreciated.
Thanks and 73 de Bert W1DFU
