Hi Kevin -

Yeah, it's a 36V Zener, probably 1W.  It's there to protect the output 
transistor from high peak voltages, usually caused by a mismatched 
load.  You  _can_  run without it, if you only drive a matched load, but ...

You can roughly gage the size by the physical size.  If it's about the 
size of a 1N4007 PS diode, it's 1W, which would be a 1N4753 or 
equivalent.   If it's bigger, like a 1N5408 PS diode, it might be a 5W 
Zener.  Those are a lot harder to find, a 1N5365 or equivalent.
