Aluminum mini-boxes, die cast boxes, etc., all will
work fine. However, with any of those you will have
to use coax connectors instead of coming directly into
the switch with the cable. Remember that it is VERY
difficult to solder to aluminum and therefore you
cannot usually solder the coax braid to the housing.
You can take the basic design and do all sorts of
things with it. The purpose of this design was to get
something that works fine for as little a cost as
possible. A "tin can" actually works pretty well and
has a reasonable amount of physical strength. But,
going to a die cast box or mini-box is definitely an
option.

Have you considered die-cast electrical boxes?
I realize that hams are cheap but the larger octagonal
boxes look like they'd work perfectly and would even
look "professional".
