According to the HR-10B assembly manual,
the bandswitched coil assembly came pre-assembled. It's referred to as
the "front end tuner assembly". I'm guessing it was considered too
challenging for a "novice" receiver.

I built an HR-10B, when I was 11 or 12 years old. I saved allowance and lawn
cutting money for it ($69.95 as I recall). There was a pre-assembled section
(supplied in it's own separate cardboard box) that went underneath the
chassis. I still have the unit. The only mistake I made was not putting the spacer
plate between the s-meter and panel, so the needle tended to rub. Thinking
back, I'm amazed that I could have build this, and have it work, at such a
young age!! My great uncle (a Ham) aligned it for me, but I assembled it by
myself. Testimony to how good the Heathkit Company was at preparing kits for
assembly by the masses.
