[Heathkit] help with DX-40

Perhaps a weak driver (it's a 6CL6).

A few questions:
- What band(s) does it do this on?
- How much grid drive is available on that band? (scale is 1-6 ma)
- Xtal or VFO? If VFO, perhaps that could be weak or wrong.
- If xtal, are you running it on fundamental, or on what harmonic?

You should be able to get upscale grid drive on all bands. If less
than half-scale, that says (if you're using a xtal) that either the
oscillator or driver (both 6CL6s) is weak.

If you have sufficient grid drive, that points to something wrong in
the final amplifier section.

Just re-reading your question, is that AM voice peaks or CW you're
talking about? I read it as CW -- but if it tunes up fine with full
carrier, then everything above is moot; the speech amp could be bad,
or the mic output level insufficient.

Good luck, OM.
