John,
I had a similar problem but solved it without de-soldering the coil. I very
carefully drilled between the
pcb pads from the solder side which allowed me to shove the pieces out the
top of the coil. The core
from a RS assortment worked fine. You may as well get used to taking the
rig apart, it's not so hard
if you reverse the assy process in the manual. You can even energize a
loose board but be super
careful not to allow anything to short to ground. Be aware that the
aluminum mid plate provides a ground
between some sections of a board (I suspect that the grounding may
contribute to all the "birdies".)
