I'm down to an AT-1, 2)DX-40 / VF-1, HX-20 and a DX-100B, plus miscellaneous VTVM's,
Signal Generators/Tracers, RLC Testers and Cantennas. Oh, and a couple of HO-10s!
The DX-100B is an interesting story..
I bought a DX-100B a few years back that looked brand new. Of course, "it works just
fine". After a few brief tests, I determined that the builder had broken the
ceramic wafer of the VFO bandswitch (if you've ever worked on a DX-100, you know
where THAT is) during assembly, and glued it back together with DUCO cement. Which
no doubt let go the first time he tried to bandswitch it. Of course it's one of
those custom funny shaped wipers, but I was able to replace it with a standard
switch by a little creative jumpering. When I got that fixed, I was rewarded with
about half power output. Checked in the final compartment, and one of the 6146's was
"loose" in the socket. Turned out he had managed to fill two of the socket pins with
solder, so the tube couldn't go in! A little judicious effort with a solder sucker
resolved that problem. Otherwise it was a beautiful construction job! It just
hurts to think of probably some kid, spending all that money, spending a week or so
building it, and then putting it in a closet and forgetting it....
