[Heathkit] Metal chassis of 60's SB- and HW- series rigs

Does anyone know if the steel chassis of the 60's era
rigs were plated, and with what?  I have a couple of
rusty ones in spots I want to restore, and I am
thinking of polishing down to the base steel and
nickle plating.
