Hi Phil;
I have reworked a couple of them. I put a closed circuit, wall-wart type
jack on the battery box, wired so plugging in a plug opens the battery
circuit and connects the external device to the radio. I put mating plugs
on a 12 volt wall wart and on a small solar panel from Harbor Freight
Tools ($10) and a cord to plug into a cigarette lighter. I put a 15 volt
Zener diode across the jack to limit the external voltage. Now I can go
AC, DC, battery or solar. Works great in all modes.
