Murray,
This is a wild guess regarding the glue. I'm thinking liquid hide glue 
mixed with a clay. I've read
that the glue alone sticks well to glass and was used to create the opaque 
crystal shaped pattern
that you used to see on office doors. If you have an old detached base 
handy, try soaking it in water
and see if the cement softens. The glue is actually quite strong and it is 
available from musical
instrument supply places for luthiers in dry powder form. The liquid stuff 
is not nearly as good.
I'd be interested in your findings.
