[Heathkit] Heathkit question

John, Phil, Pete (and all),

This is a reoccurring rumor. The mystery person, whom I do have the name of,
posted to this list last year. He was investigated and shown to be just a fraud.

While Pete is correct about some people formerly affiliated with Heathkit
selling items at Dayton, the stories about the street sales and so forth in
Benton Harbor are mostly an urban legend.

Benton Harbor today looks like a ghost town, truly pathetic. The entire
community has simply turned into a blight stricken area that some call a ghetto.
Poverty and unemployment there is perhaps the worst in the state of Michigan.
When Heathkit shut down, it really hurt this community. I am NOT blaming
Heathkit for what happened, but there was not enough industry left, or willing
to move in, to pick up the slack.

Although Flint, MI did not suffer the fate that Benton Harbor did, when most of
General Motors left here, including Buick City with the highest quality numbers
of any GM facility anywhere, it devestated the entire county. Other industry had
been kept away by the 'powers that be', so what could have saved Flint's economy
was never allowed to build here. Politicians blocked other companies from using
the old GM facilities, who knows why. All in all, Flint was ruined because the
city fathers did not have, or were too cowardly to use, the foresight needed to
see the future and plan for it. Money talks and good sense is avoided because it
makes too few cents!

Well, the rumor still pops up from time to time about some guy in the
Toledo Ohio area who has a "warehouse full" of unbuilt kits and will sell
them "when the time is right".
If he waits to long for the right time, the people who really cared
about them will be long gone.
                                                                    John
