[Heathkit] "The Mohican advances"

Hi,

Well, I just put the main PC Board back in the Mohican. I'd removed it
to facilitate replaced the 'lytic capacitors, especially the large 3
unit can. It needed some extensive re-work that was too difficult to
perform with it installed.

While I had it out I removed many of the "posts" AKA test points that
were installed on the PCB board. When it was originally built they
didn't get a good "bite" into the phenolic and to add insult to injury
many of them didn't take solder well or had stress put on them and broke
a couple pads loose from the PCB. I only left a few posts in that had
wires connecting to them on the underside of the board that I felt
wouldn't "stress" the joint any, IF they had a nice large solder pad to
secure it to! With a couple broken pads etc it's a miracle that the
radio played at all (and it did).

Now this thing seems "hotter 'n a firecracker" but it sure needs the
fingers of a safe cracker to tune a station with the main tuning
control.

Except for final alignment I think it is finally finished, but it won't
be installed in it's cabinet for at least a month. I just had the
cabinet repainted with automotive paint and the man who took care of it
for me suggested I let it "cure" for a month anyway. Right now it's
merrily playing away over on the work table, operating off an adjustable
20 Amp Heathkit 2760 bench supply. Do you think that's heavy enough
duty for this "Mohican Boatanchor" <grin>?
