I agree. This has been my experience with both the HG-10(*) and the 
VF-1.  I had to try several tubes to get one that completely eliminated 
chirp and drift in either VFO.

The VF-1 that I use with my HW-16 is really very stable and keys well.

The VF-1, when properly built and powered is an excellent VFO. 
Besides, I really like that funky green dial. :-)
