Jim - I don't have an answer on the compactrons, but on the "2nd, the focus is
good on the leading end of the trace but deteriorates badly at the trailing
edge"...I do.

You need to look at the resistors that are connected to the scope in the HV
line.  Most of these are underrated.  They are 1/2 watt or 1 watt resistors.  A
cursory look will probably tell you some or all are "cooked".  I would replace
the several there with the same resistance value but higher wattage...double it
at least (they will fit fine).  I would also look at the HV and LV capacitors
in the power supply.  Those caps are underrated also....especially the one in
the HV.  While I'm in there, I'd replace them.  You may have to put two in
series to make up the capacitance & voltage.

These are relatively easy to work on.
