[Heathkit] ID'ing a Heathkit Tape Recorder?

a friend of mine has the following; the unit is sitting in a rack
of military equipment.  He had told me that he found "HE-1" on one
of the pieces, but so far i've had no luck finding that nomenclature.
it APPEARS that the two pieces are actually both part of the tape
recorder - but all Heath tape recorders seem to be "AD-**" or "TR-**",
and i can't seem to match photos or descriptions to this equipment.
