Wayne,  
I still have the HR-10 I built as a novice (40+ years ago!).  Everytime I 
have had a problem with it (just 2 or 3 times), I have found a defective 
component.  For a simple superhet, I have found its pretty well designed (mine has 
never drifted noticeably after warm up).  I'd look for a bad tube or a bad part, 
in either of the oscillators or the power supply.  Good hunting!
