It is a commonly used abbreviation for the affectionate
term "boatanchor" as it applies to old tube gear that
for a time people treated as worthless except perhaps
dumped in the water at the end of a chain as dead weight
-- literal anchors (lots of steel on the cases and transformers)
for boats.
Modern affection for older rigs has taken them from "junk"
to "collectible" along with the redemption of the formerly
pejorative label.
