The Apache only covers 80 through 10 meters. The
Mohawk also covers 160 and 11 meters plus 22 MHz to 26
MHz for converter bands.
This is like saying that the Hallicrafters SX-101
wasn't the matching receiver to the HT-32 since the
original SX-101 covered 160 meters. The later SX-101
receivers dropped the 160 meter band but added a band
from 30.5 MHz to 34.5 MHz to be used with 6 meter and
2 meter converters.
The Mohawk was also sold to be used with the XC-6 and
XC-2 6 meter and 2 meter converters to be compatible
with the Seneca (VHF-1) that was styled in the same
manner as the Mohawk but was a fair bit smaller.
Also, the Apache was CW and AM only, but the SB-10 SSB
adapter would allow SSB. The SB-10 was also used with
both the DX-100 and DX-100B with the suitable
modification kit that was sold by Heath.
The Mohawk was a "satisfactory" SSB receiver back in
the late 1950s and early 1960s. It definitely does
not compare with later receivers that work very well
on SSB but are marginal on AM. When it came out, the
"problems" were not "problems" because amateur radio
operators did not have better receivers with which to
compare the Mohawk.
The fact that the Marauder functions better on SSB
than the Mohawk really doesn't affect the fact that
Heath marketed the receiver to be used with both the
Apache and Marauder. The Mohawk was basically a 1957
design that was marketed starting in 1958 as was the
Apache. The Marauder was basically a 1961 design
which is 4 years newer. However, the Mohawk remained
the "top of the line" receiver until the introduction
of the SB-300 in the mid-1960s.
Therefore, I still maintain that the Mohawk was the
"matching" receiver for the Marauder. This is due to
the styling, the fact that it did have a product
detector in it, and the fact that Heath advertised it
referring to the Marauder.
You disagree, and that is certainly your privilege.
But, considering that starting with the Apache /
Mohawk series that Heath provided a matching
transmitter and receiver for their "top of the line"
amateur radio equipment, I still believe that the
Mohawk was "the" receiver that was sold to be used
with the Marauder and therefore is the "matching"
receiver.

Glen you might remember that the Heathkit Ads say
"styled to match the Marauder and Apache" I agree.
When you say sold as the matching receiver, I
disagree, the Marauder covers 80 - 10. The Mohawk
covers 160 - 10. So I gotta say ok in an appearance
way but not in performance. Moreover the Marauder
acts like a sweet "band cruiser" and the unmodified
Mohawk has problems in a couple of areas that are well
known. In my mind the two are very much different but
it is all under the hood.
