Strange... my ECG book shows them looking like a sort of 'bullet'... with
contacts on either end which would snap into a socket... similar to a fuse.
I guess that's a good thing... maybe a replacement will be easier to find
than I'd originally thought. You might try RTO
(http://www.rtoham.com/html/heathkit.html)... they don't list the part, but
might be able to tell you what the specs are.

Further to my first call for help. I should say that these 57-56 diodes look
like any other diode. Only diff is they are about 1/2" long, and 1/8" or so
dia. About the size of 1/2 watt resistor. Black, with silver band on one
end. Thanks for all the suggestions so far.
