Hi Folks...

The other day I took apart a Heath rain gauge and noticed that
from being outside for a few years an accumulation of pine
needles, leaves and of all things sand from shingles was inside
the unit.  The debris was blocking the flow to the funnel which
would cause misreading to occur.  This was an accumulation that
went beyond the small screening thats it already there !   But
most of all, depending on your location,  it retained the water
and when the colder weather arrived turned into ice causing the
funnel to crack.
Just an idea,  either place a large portion of screening over the
gauge itself, or every couple of years clean out the whole unit.
