What I use is a powdered product called "Bar Keepers
Friend" that is available from most supermarkets.

I use a toothbrush to apply a little to the knob after
wetting the knob with water.  After a little scrubbing
the knobs have a very shiny finish and look almost as
good as the chrome variants.
