John,
I agree it is likely in the bal mod so check for a ground at the diodes where
the lead goes to the mode switch 2F and also check the carrier null capacitor
for a short.

Subject: [Heathkit] HW-101, full carrier, no voice when in SSB position & PTT
activated

Greetings,

I am trying to restore a HW-101, the receiver works fine, the transmitter
works fine but only on CW. When shifting to SSB and pressing the PTT button,
all
I get is full carrier out, +/- 100 watts Continuous Wave, I cannot get the
carrier to balance out no matter what I try. The bias is set correctly, but
there
is no idling current in SSB, just full output each time I press the PTT
switch with the mode switch in either SSB position.

Normal logic would suggest the trouble is in the balanced modulator section,
but with these old rigs, it seems that normal logic and trouble shooting
techniques are out the window. Has anyone else experienced this, can anyone
point
me in the right direction? I have read many of the archives, but maybe I
missed
the one referring to this phenomena.

Any help is appreciated.
