Well, as time permitted yesterday, I put in the rest of the components for the AT-1's 6L6 final amp circuit. I added an extra terminal strip to lessen the population of components on the tube socket. I think that was a smart move as it resulted in a cleaner less cluttered tube socket bottom. That move made installing components much easier. Just a few drawbacks surfaced however: apparently my parts count at the electronics store left me shy of a few capacitors: another 100 pf for the plate blocking cap to the plate tuning capacitor and a 68 pf for one of the tank coil circuits.
Finally (no pun intended), I attempted to resolder all of the connections on the tank coil wiring. That part I didn't take down and put back together. Instead, I elected to retain the wiring and simply clean up and resolder all of the connections. After 40 or so years, solder does tend to crystallize, degrade and I felt that resoldering the connections would help. As Murphy would have it, my 25 watt R.S. special didn't thoroughly melt some solder connections. The hardware connections were "sinking" a lot of the heat from the connection. I have a higher wattage 40 watt iron in my box but I really miss my old Weller soldering iron with 120 watt/240 watt capability. I misplaced that gun and if I can't find it, I intend to look for another one! Before the tank goes back into the AT-1, all the soldered connections must be remelted/resoldered and the wiring cleaned up before reinstallation. I expect the time the AT-1 to be finished would be sometimes next week.
