Once in a while you might be able to neutralize them.
However, in the vast majority of the older rigs
designed for the 6146 / 6146A the 6146B causes
problems. My SB-110A definitely does not like the
6146B.
You can take the heaters ("filaments") of the final
amplifier tubes from series to parallel and use the
6883/6883A/8032 tubes which are nothing more than 12
volt equivalents of the 6146/6146A/8298. These tubes
are often very cheap because literally thousands of
them were used in commercial FM two-way equipment.
You don't want the 6883B/8032A/8552 because this is
the 12 volt equivalent of the 6146B. I did this with
my SB-110A and have done it with several of the
SB-Line transceivers for others. If you want to go
back to the 6146 tubes, all you have to do is to
remove one ground and move the heater wire back to the
series configuration.
Look on the websites that are listed on this message
for the article on the 6146 family that was in
Electric Radio just under 2 years ago.

It seems like I read somewhere that 6146Bs should not
be used in a SB-110A. Am I right?
