John:
First off, make sure you use a HOT iron, not one of those whimpy pencil iron gizmos. Large contacts tend to soak up the heat from 25 watt irons or so. A good solid Weller 75watt or 120/240w soldering GUN is the weapon of choice.

Finally, when you do have the amp up and running, be sure to either 1) keep an eye on the knobs you are twiddling while operating or 2) do something to the bandswitch knob to ensure that you don't switch that thing while in the heat of a QSO or tuning up.

A few years ago, a friend of mine, Phil Stacy, WB6CAN, accidentally turned the bandswitch on his then newly built Heathkit SB-220. The result was that he "nuked" the switch into a carbon fried crisp. Of course, he ordered a new switch from Heath and everything was normal after that. To ensure he didn't do the same mistake, he wrapped his switch with a bunch of rubber bands to i.d. the knob while "brail-ing" his SB-220's control panel You don't have that luxury of obtaining spare parts of that caliber these days so be careful on the post restoration side of the house.

Good luck!
