Couldn't help but take a look at your problem and reminesce (sp?). Sounds like your BA has the classic case of green corrosion. Your solution of using vinegar sounds good. In fact, this was a form of a technique highly used on my ship while I was in the Navy a decade and a half ago or more.
Sailors cleaning off the verdigris (the green corrosive oxide you mentioned) off of brass firefighting fittings would grab a pack of powedered imititation fruit drink from the galley and mix it with water to form "bug juice" (the affectionate term used to describe those koolaid style drinks). They would pour the mixture into a bucket and soak the brass fitting until it came out spotlessly clean. The highly acidic content of the "bug juice" ate the corrosion off of the brass nozzle.
In any event, thanks for triggering my memory. I'm really not that old but thinking about those days sure days make me feel old.
