The GC-1000 searches 10, 15, and 20 MHz, and locks onto the strongest one. 
The newer clocks do use the VLF signal, and don't need any antenna external 
to the box, and work quite well, and don't cost too much, either. Another 
plus is that many of the new clocks are battery operated, so they don't 
need to re-aquire the signal after a power failure.
