[Heathkit] DX-100U

There were numerous Heathkits produced in the UK for
the European market that were variations on those
produced in St. Joseph, Michigan (the actual Heath
plant was in St. Joseph, the mailing address was
Benton Harbor). Most of these had different looking
front panels and were set up for 110/220 VAC whereas
virtually all of the US equipment was for 110 VAC
only.

Back in the late 1950s and early 1960s, a local (to me
in northern Indiana) newstand occasionally had copies
of the magazine "Wireless World" that was printed in
the UK. Usually there were advertisements (sometimes
several pages worth) of the European Heathkits
including photos, specifications, etc.

If you look back through the various amateur magazines
from the 1950s and 1960s (especially QST), when a
photo is shown of a DX station, there is often one, or
more, of these Heath units shown. However, if you
didn't know what they looked like, you might not
recognize them. The DX-40U was very common as was the
DX-20U. The cabinets were different, the meters were
different, and the printing on the panels were
different in both font and color. However, the basic
layout of the panel was usually pretty much the same
as the stateside versions.

So, that's what it is. It was driving me up the wall
trying to figure what the heck it was. It sure ain't
in Chuck Penson's book.
