Heath-Zenith sold a lot of the X-10 technology devices, I've been using 
some of them for years to control the outdoor lightning at my home.

Go to http://www.smarthome.com/x10map.html  and you may find something 
similar to what you have.  The device you have sounds like a remote switch 
device that was sold that was used to put a switch in a location that you 
didn't want to hardwire a switch thru the walls.
