I installed all the mods you listed except the fan.  I also installed the
soft-start module.  I would do it all again in a heartbeat.

You misunderstand the power rating of that amplifier.  Back in those days,
we were limited to 1,000 watts dc input for CW and 2,000 watts PEP input for
SSB.  The SB-220 was not designed to be a 1,500 watt output amplifier!
