Looseness or corrosion between ground lugs, rear-phone jack shorting 
switch,  and/or tuning cap bearings. Will get the can of DeOxit out.

Last night, I discovered some white corrosion between the pieces of the 
coil shield compartment and the main chassis which MAY be part of the 
problem.

I'll let you all know how it works out.

BTW, if you've a mind to use your VF-1 with grid-block keyed rigs, you
