Hi Dick,
The use of current limiting in the HP-23 supply isn't really worth the
work, it would offer no real advantage. The Z of the power
transformer and the use of a doubler system allows enough
current limiting so that the peak current of the diodes isn't exceeded.
As far as tube rigs are concerned, it wouldn't have any effect anyway
because the tubes aren't capable of drawing current until the cathode
comes up to temperature anyway. If inrush current were a problem with
these supplies, we would have seen plenty of failures over the 30 some
odd
years that supply has been around, and that simply isn't the case.
High power linear amp supplies should use a step start circuit because
if the supply is designed to have good voltage regulation with the
demands
of a high power amplifier on its output the power transformer has to have
a low impedance which would not allow for any current limiting while the
filter caps charge.
