Hey Larry,

this is lauren ke1dw.  Tonight I?m helping at a scout camp out and missed the meeting.   I?m available for the entire weekend and will help set up, operate, and will bring some food like pulled pork to share.  I was hoping to fill in and watch operators before i jump in  as I haven?t done a lot of contesting.  My last field day was 2002 or so.  I am a skilled operator though and have done cw. I would be interested in hearing about the setup like if a computer is used to reply.  I will be staying over in my van

Hi Lauren,

Great on you staying all weekend. I'll be there with my little camper and I
think W1TRK will be in his tent and I think one or two others too.

For staying over, you'll need your own breakfast and lunch on Saturday and
we usually all pitch in for dinner Friday night for pizza or something. The
rest of the meals the club provides.

There will be plenty of people here that can help you get comfortable with
the logging program and how everything works. Often on SSB especially,
there will be someone at the mic and another person logging. Often the
logger coaches the person at the mic.

We're not high stress contesting. It's more a teaching and fun contest that
a run at first place. So you can make your own pace and enjoy it too.

Obviously dress for the weather. I used to tell my scouts be prepared for
10 degrees colder than predicted and 10 degrees hotter as they weather
people seldom get it correct. Always have rain gear and the lawn tends to
be damp in the mornings, so appropriate footwear, bug repellent, sun
screen, folding chair, sun hat plus the usual.

I put you down for pulled pork that you'll be bringing.

The group will start setting up around 1 pm on Friday. I probably won't be
there that early myself, probably more like 3-4 and will be there through
the end on Sunday.

We're good on computers, radios and generators now. But feel free to bring
anything you think you or the club might need or want. It's better to have
and not use.

Thank you for volunteering. You will have an enjoyable weeked!

Hi Larry and All

I expect to be able to come Friday late afternoon & evening, and maybe some time Saturday.
Is it the same place as last year?

I'll bring my radios {AnyTone DMR handheld and my new Yaesu FT818ND}, and a whip antenna.
Hope some folks there will be able to help me use them.
Need to rig up a power supply for the Yaesu before arriving.

Just a quick note to let those of you who may have QSL cards that you wish to be sent through the Outgoing bureau that you have a little extra time beyonfd the normal June 15th deadline to get them. prepared and to me. I will be away beginning tomorrow until the end of the month so cards will not be sent out until early July upon my return.

NOTICE!

Fox Box #1 is still in hiding as of June 9th. I could even wake it from 
its slumber from South Hadley. If you are looking for something fun to 
do this weekend why not try to find the fox? For more details on the fox 
go to: groups.io/g/WMAFoxHunters/ or read below.

Are you up to the task of locating that diabolical fox! Can YOU find it?

HINT, I was able to wake it from its slumber with 50 watts on Rte.391 
crossing the Connecticut River and most recently I was able to wake it 
from South Hadley.

FB1 is running one watt into an 18-inch antenna. To activate FB1 go to 
the 2-meter simplex frequency of 147.550 MHz (PL 100.0Hz), key your 
transmitter, identify yourself then press the DTMF 1. If the Fox can 
hear you (and you can hear it) you will hear its very distinctive sound. 
It will transmit for 30 seconds, ID, and then repeat 2 more times before 
going back to sleep. You can make it transmit as often as necessary to 
locate it.

This is also a good opportunity for base stations to get in on the fun. 
If you can hear the fox please give its signal strength and direction if 
possible. Please do not reveal its location, just a direction where you 
can hear it from, this then becomes a starting point for the other 
hunters to use. It's just as important for the hunters to know where it 
CANNOT be heard as well as where it CAN be heard!

If you are successful at locating FB1, (you do not have to touch it to 
claim finding it) eyeball contact is sufficient. Please post a photo of 
the FB (not revealing its location) as there might be other hunters 
still out there trying to find it. It is located less than 500 feet from 
a safe parking location. Announce it and post the photo here on this 
group and the HCRA Facebook Group that you found it along with any 
comments other than its location. We want to know who has found it and 
who hasn't.

I can tell you it's in a publicly accessible location with nearby safe 
parking. Getting to FB-1 may require a short walk on mostly flat ground.

ALL Fox Hunters are welcome to participate regardless of affiliation or 
location!

The first HCRA 10 meter net of the summer schedule net will be held on 
Monday, 6/13 at 7pm on 28.375 usb

Topic: Open mic night, each net participant can talk about whatever they 
want!

28.375 is within the Technician's license privileges so if you are a ham 
with a tech or greater license you are encouraged to participate.

The purpose of this net is to practice and assist new hams with HF 
operating procedures, to get over mic shyness, and above all to have fun!

If you know anyone with a tech or higher class license, please tell them 
to join us and get in on the fun! This net only lasts an hour or so so 
there is no reason not to take part in this net!

All licensed hams are encouraged to participate regardless of club 
affiliation!

I'm looking for volunteers to man the Big E booth for one or more sessions
for the following days.

Reminding everyone to be at the School Street Park for 1:00 pm on Friday to
help set up antennas and towers for Field Day.

Unless you are staying over or have items that we will use for Field Day,
please park in the main parking lot and walk in.

We are looking for SSB ops for Saturday night for both 40 and 20 meters.
Are you available?

8pm - 8am is in need of SSB ops.

We could also use some cw ops too, to add to our stable of ops.

As we are now less than 3 months from the ham radio booth at the Big E and
the HCRA/New England Sci-Tech ARISS (Amateur Radio on the International
Space Station) contact at the Big E, we need someone familiar with AV
equipment.

Are you familiar with AV equipment?

We need someone who can work with the ARISS group and the Big E  to make
sure all equipment meshes together and works.

This is going to be a VERY exciting activity and contact. You can be part
of the crew that helps students talk to the ISS and be there when it
happens!
