Fox Box 2 has returned to it's den for recharging.

It was located in the woods to the side of the Medina Street boat ramp in
Chicopee.

The first is a Diamond CR8900 Quad band 2/440/6 and 10m mobile antenna. HRO
sells it for $99.
The second is a Comet black 2/440 mobile antenna in black. C-757 is the
model number and this goes for $80 in HRO.

Attention Foxhunters!
As of 1500hrs, June 4th, HCRA Foxbox #1 has escaped from the den and has 
gone back into hiding!
That sneaky fox is running one watt into an 18-inch antenna. I was able 
to wake it from its slumber with 50 watts in my mobile at the 
intersection of Memorial Drive & Pendleton Ave in Chicopee, MA. 
co-ordinates 42.18646, -72.57745
FB1 is running one watt into an 18-inch antenna. To activate the FB1 go 
to the simplex frequency of 147.550 MHz (PL 100.0Hz), key your 
transmitter,identify yourself with your callsignthen press the DTMF "1". 
If the Fox can hear you (and you can hear it) you will hear its very 
distinctive sound. It will transmit for 30 seconds, ID and then repeat 2 
more times and then go back to sleep. You can make it transmit as often 
as necessary to locate it.
This is a good opportunity for base stations to get in on the fun. If 
you can hear the fox please give its signal strength and direction if 
possible. Please do not reveal its location, just a location where you 
can hear it from, this then becomes a starting point for the other fox 
hunters to use. It's just as important for the hunters to know where it 
CANNOT be heard as well as where it CAN be heard!
If you locate the Foxbox, you do not have to touch it to claim finding 
it. Eyeball contact is sufficient but please post a photo (not revealing 
its location) as there may be other hunters still out there. It is 
located less than 500 feet from a safe parking location. Announce it and 
post the photo here on this group and on thegroups.io/g/WMAFoxHunters

  Fox Box 2 is recharged and has been hidden.
  FB2 is running 1 watt into a long ducky antenna. It is located in a walk
up public location with plenty of parking.
  Hint: Agawam is SO nice this time of the year.
  FB2 transmits on 147.55 MHz with a PL of 154.3. Use the #1 key to
activate FB2 which will then transmit some tones and ID in CW.
  If you find it, please take a picture of it, with the hunters is even
better, but do not say where it is. But other hints to help other hunters
are welcome.

myself with what will be used.

Fred, AB1OC, continues to devote considerable time and energy to license

Once again, another difficult choice that has to be made when it comes to
voting for either Fred.  A few years ago it was something similar when Fred
(K1VR) ran against Tom Frenaye (K1KI). Both are very smart individuals and
are deeply involved in the hobby. I was hoping Fred (K1VR) would do well.

The following is just my 2 cents.

Fred (K1VR) is an established telecommunications lawyer that has helped
countless hams when it comes to dealing with cities, towns and their zoning
boards. He's written books that were published by the ARRL that pertain to
zoning. He even helped me personally when it came to putting up my roof
tower. He is also an active contester which is something that I really care
about. However, I got to see him in action at his first New England DIV
meeting and left with different feeling.

He seemed to be out of touch about the other aspects of amateur radio at
the time. Hopefully that has since changed. He also lacks an online
presence that I feel in this day-in-age is important. The directors should
be out there personally engaging with hams and clubs using various social
media platforms. For example, I see the Hudson directory being very active
and engaging people on QRZ, reddit, twitter and facebook. She's not just
sitting there waiting for people to contact her. I know some folks in HCRA
don't embrace social media platforms but it's here to stay and for younger
people (the future of our hobby), it's important that they be heard.

I've been following Fred (AB1OC) basically since he became a ham in 2010.
He has done some amazing things in the past 10 years. He has built a very
impressive station to where he does presentations about it. He appears to
be involved in multiple aspects of amateur radio and he does have a strong
online presence. He is big into helping people get interested in amateur
radio.  He helped turned the Nashua club from just a regular club to a club
that other clubs now look up to and often used as comparison. They are very
active in their local community, very active at the ARRL NE Div meetings
and helped out with Boxboro. If you check out http://www.n1fd.org, you can
see what this club has been up to.
However, I'm not entirely sure if has what it takes to be the New England
director.

Having good ideas is one thing, trying to implement them is another. He
will be dealing with other directors, some who are very set in their ways.
Being the head of a local club is one thing, dealing with multiple clubs
and other directors can be challenging.

I'll be looking forward to what both candidates have to say (that is if
K1VR is running). Vote wisely.

The Franklin Land Trust's Deerfield Dirt Road Randonee (D2R2)

The FLT's mission statement is, ?We celebrate the landscaper, the 
history, and the rural culture of western Massachusetts, and work to 
ensure, through a program of land protection, that the historic pattern 
of field, woodland and village will endure for the benefit of 
generations to come.?

A major FLT fundraising event is the Deerfield Dirt Road Randonee (D2R2) 
and your help is needed, please consider volunteering.

The D2R2 consists of bicycle tours of up 180 km, routed on back roads in 
the countryside the FLT works to preserve. Not surprisingly, phone 
service is sparse in these areas. Since 2013 the FCARC has supported? 
this event by providing? communication between event headquarters in 
Deerfield and sites in towns like Colrain MA and Guilford VT where 
water, lunch, and other support is provided for riders.

Last year, the D2R2 did not happen, this year plans for a modified D2R2 
have been announced. There will be only three routes, 100k, 160k, and 
180k.? The number of riders will be limited. There will be no catered 
sit-down lunches, but there will be six or more support locations with 
water and take-with food packages. There will be pre-packaged take-out 
dinners and the usual free beer and souvenir mug.

The FLT has again asked FCARC to help with communication between the 
event headquarters and several of the remote support sites where amateur 
radio is the best communications option. This is where you come in as 
volunteers are needed to make this work!

1. Fred Hopengarten took over seven months to recommend to the president a
replacement for the vacancy of Vice Director.
2. He still has not appointed a new Contest Advisory Committee
representative for New
England to fill the vacancy created by Dennis Egan, W1UE's resignation
at the beginning of this year.  6 months ago.
3. He has appointed to date only one Assistant Director (he essentially has
NO cabinet).
4. He had ample opportunity upon being elected to get a division website
started.
5. He's not an action guy. He's just sitting in position, not doing much.

FB2 has come back for re-charging. It was hidden along the fence on the
left of the parking lot of the Borghatti Field on River Road in Agawam.
The blue dot is where it was hidden.
FB2 will stay away from public places until it is re-hidden again just
before Field Day the HCRA way. It will be somewhere at the School Street
Park HCRA Field Day site. This will be a walk up hunt. Will you be up to
the challenge?

there was a WBZA radio here in Springfield at one time.

The HCRA is working with the Billerica club to co-sponsor this operating
event. Billerica started the event and the HCRA is helping out in many ways
including the use of one of our club calls  WB1Z.

The call signs used are: W1W, W1B, W1Z and WB1Z.

It's going to be lots of fun and you will start seeing info everywhere very
soon. There will be a special QSL card and possibly a certificate.

We are looking for operators to sign up to activate during the 3 day
period. We're looking for CW, SSB and Digital ops as well as Satellite.

Neat special event!

Springfield is more involved in this than just WBZA.

For the first ten of those 100 years, WBZ was located in
*Springfield*, first at the former Westinghouse site on Page Blvd.,
then atop the Hotel Kimball. WBZA was a relay site in Boston. When
Boston became the primary market, WBZ and WBZA switched (~1931).

Although other broadcast stations existed at the time, WBZ was the
first to be licensed as what we now call a "broadcast station" (as
opposed to amateur or experimental). This is a *significant*
historical event for Springfield that is often overlooked.

Good day and I hope everyone is ready for Field Day 2021.

Here are a few reminders so that everybody has a wonderful, safe and fun 
Field Day this weekend.

Field Day 2021 is held on June 25th - June 27th, beginning with setup 
Friday at 1pm through Sunday, tear-down is usually completed by 4 pm. 
Field Day hours are 1800 UTC Saturday and ending at 2059 UTC Sunday.

Note: All Volunteers must be fully vaccinated against Covid-19! If 
you?re not vaccinated please stay home and operate. This is for your 
safety and the safety of other participants! Mask's are optional, that 
is your choice.

If you will be operating from home please be sure to add, Hampden County 
Radio Association as the club to credit your scores to. (MUST be spelled 
out fully). Even if you can?t be there you can still support your club!

If you want to operate and have your Covid vaccinations contact Larry 
at: w1ast at arrl.net and you will be given a time slot.

Bring your fox hunting gear as there will be two fox boxes hidden 
somewhere at the park!

Don't forget the HCRA raffle for anyone who works more than 2 hours for 
setup, tear down or operation. The raffle prize is a Yaesu FT-4XR dual 
band HT. No purchase needed. Your work time is your entry. You must be 
working FD at the park or those who helped with the trailer inventory 
are already entered.
