From computercare at comcast.net Sun Aug 2 16:03:14 2020 From: computercare at comcast.net (Larry Krainson) Date: Sun, 2 Aug 2020 16:03:14 -0400 Subject: [HCRA] No Boxboro/HamXposition this Year Message-ID: Hello All, Large indoor gatherings such as our convention are currently prohibited by Massachusetts state law. This is highly unlikely to change by November. Unfortunately, we will not be able to hold a physical convention this year. However, we do plan some virtual activities, all free. We are currently working on the details for these and will keep you posted as they develop: We plan to the operate the W1A special event station over the weekend of October 31st - November 1st. To avoid a conflict with the November Sweepstakes, we moved this to one week earlier. W1A will be operated from the operator's home stations. Dennis, W1UE, is coordinating the schedule. If you would like to be a W1A operator, please contact W1UE by email at w1ue at hamxposition.org. For those who would like to work W1A, we will be posting the operating schedule once it is ready. Note that this will give regular attendees the unique opportunity to work W1A (something which would have been more difficult for many to do operating portable from a hotel room). We will also be hosting a Saturday evening virtual banquet on November 7th, featuring a guest speaker. There will be no charge for this event. Order your favorite take-out or delivery, pull up a chair to your screen and join your friends for an interesting presentation. After the talk, virtual break-out rooms will be available for you to converse with your "table". The Nashua Area Radio Club will be running an online version of the "Ham Boot Camp". This is a multisession program for hams young and old to learn about the various activities they can do with their license. Details to follow. Eastern Mass ARES will be running online versions of their training sessions. Details to follow. Hopefully being self quarantine and having extra time home has been productive for you to create some interesting projects that you can show all the members on Zoom for the September 11th meeting. Yes, the general consensus is Zoom meetings for the near future until the threat of Covid-19 is under control. You don't need a webcam on a laptop to participate. You can use your cell phone's camera as well as a tablet's camera or a usb camera. The meeting is a month away and you have time to prepare your project to be displayed online to the group and explained for a chance to win some neat prizes that are different from past years. I know everyone is looking forward to seeing everyone else at the meeting on Zoom. Get those projects ready to display to the club! Stay cool and healthy and enjoy the remainder of the summer! Do we know for sure it is a software issue? Sounds to me like it is more likely hardware related. Though, if your friend is running this for business, I'd imagine he'd know and it wouldn't have been able to sit idle for a number of weeks. Is it running headless? I certainly won?t have the depth of knowledge that folks like you do, but could help him navigate some of the early issues, like taking the exams and building out his shack. Also, HDSDR is a software package that?s a front end to the small SDR?s like SDR play and the dongles. I have a dongle I?ve been trying to turn into a panadapter but for $50 and a download of HDSDR for free, you?re on the air and listening to anything from 1mhz to 3Ghz. To me, for any potential new ham, this is a great way to go. I could also share with him the study method I used to pass the exams. I got 4 wrong across all three exams so it worked for me. ________________________________ From: hcra-bounces at mailman.qth.net on behalf of Larry Krainson Sent: Sunday, August 23, 2020 5:14:44 PM To: HCRA Email List Subject: [HCRA] SDR explanation for possible new ham ______________________________________________ -------Hampden County Radio Association------- -----------e-mail list (reflector)------------- ______________________________________________ Hello All, A friend that is tinkering with HDSDR with either weather balloons of high altitude balloons is looking for some help.
