How well they do for a large mismatch has to do with the range of
components used. My olde Drake will not do 160 at all, because it doesn't
have enough inductance.
To my knowledge, none use a simple L-network. I suspect the reason is there
are 8 possible configurations of of two reactances (C or L) in series or
parallel with the transmission line, which would be expensive to implement.
So the answer on how well they do has to do more with the sell price that
much else.
Remember: hams are cheap!
Would I buy an auto tuner? Yes, to place up on a mast close to the antenna.
How if I ran a KW & wanted one in the shack? No I would build an L-network.

PS Both my xceivers (1000MP and Orion) came with a tuner. I find the 'MP
tuner getting "stuck" in an impossible match situation occasionally. The
Orion tuner tends not to do that. It is an LDG. Says so on the circuit
board.

While the auto tuners have come a long way in just a few years, can they
handle big power, how well do they tune random wire and ladder line dipole
antennas. How well do they tune a large mis-match?
My friend Larry W1LEJ has a Ten-Tec 238B which has the single needle SWR
needle and single needle power out put. It is capable of full legal limit,
and tuning all kinds of differing antennas' up for sale. The Ten Tec unit
sells for over $700.00 new and Larry is asking for a pristine tuner only
two years old and not a lot of time on it for $500.00
