[HCRA] N1MM Logging Program Request

Richard,
I'm sure N1MM would do OK for logging at a Special Event (SE) station but
I'm not sure it is the best tool for the job. N1MM is primarily designed to
be a contest logger and doesn't have a lot of functionality you may want for
an SE log. Things like notes, QSL sent/received are not truly supported with
N1MM. It has a lot of features that probably don't have much application to
an SE station too. You don't have to use them but they will be there to
complicate the situation. It did a nice job at FD, but that is a much
different animal than a SE station.
I would suggest a couple of things.
1. If you don't hear from Ed, KB1NWH drop him a private email. He's done a
number of SE stations for HCRA over the years and may have some
recommendations.
2. The same goes for Dave, KB1MU and his operation of the Titanic SE
station.
3. Personally, there is a free logger out there called XM log that in my
opinion works well and is easy to setup and use. You can learn more about
that at: http://www.xmlog.com/. You could also download and install some of
the modules from DXlabs (http://www.dxlabsuite.com/) and it will do the job
nicely too, but maybe a bit more difficult to setup and learn.
4. From a participant standpoint it is always neat when the SE station
operator returns with your name or QTH. Obviously they are using either a
callbook CD or online lookup. I know DXlabs supports both, not sure about
XMlog.
5. The biggest thing is to be sure the program can handle QSL tracking and
hopefully labels for QSL cards too. When we did the SE station at the
Basketball Hall of Fame and had several hundred QSO's the labels are a nice
feature!
6. Also important if you've got a number of new ops is how easy is it for
them to use the software. Simple wins out many times in those situations so
keep that in mind.
That's my two cents, I'm sure some others will chime in with some even
better suggestions.
