Working a contest requires logging the correct information at the time of
the contact as defined in the rules of a particular contest. In the case of
the ARRL January VHF Sweepstakes the required exchange is:
# Exchange: Grid-square locator (see April 1994 QST, p 86).
1. 4.1. Exchange of signal report is optional.
By definition you should not log a contact unless you have the stations call
sign and gridsquare. You shouldn't log a contact and then go to a different
resource to fill out the missing part of the exchange. That's against the
contest rules and just isn't in the spirit of the event. When you submit
your 'contest log' to the ARRL it should contain the contacts as you
actually copied them at the time.
There is no problem with using the internet or other sources to fill in
missing items that aren't part of the exchange. If in addition to logging
the call, grid square and signal strength you want to track city, county, or
state in your log and QSL based on that information that's fine. Those
contacts you could send a QSL to the station (as long as you have call sign,
time, band, and mode) and get credit for other awards - but not in your
contest log.
I know it seems like nit-picking however the whole purpose of contesting is
to copy the stations call sign and required exchange information 'over the
air', not with post-contest markups before submitting the log.
See you all on the air at 2:00 PM EST tomorrow afternoon for some contest
fun. We'll be listening on 146.55 and 146.58 for you.
