Well, the first night has crawled pretty much to a standstill by 9:00 PM or
so. That's the good thing about this contest, you don't have to stay up late
to make points!
I finally got the station almost ready by the 7:00 PM contest start time.
Kind of ready, still didn't have the SteppIR control box wired but at least
the rotor was working and I left the antenna tuned to 10M when I
disconnected it earlier this week. I finished wiring the new plug later this
evening so we will be good to go tomorrow.
I worked quite a few HCRA members, more than a half dozen I think. It was
nice to hear so much activity from the club. The band was pretty much as
expected. I did manage to work IL, heard OH but couldn't work him. Didn't
hear much past PA or NJ to the south. Split about 50/50 between phone and CW
contacts - a long way to go to approach last year's score.
Look for the band to start to open after daybreak tomorrow morning. With any
luck you may hear some Europeans before noon. If you have a beam point it
NNE and see what you can hear. Also take a stab pointing it South later in
the day - there could very well be some enhancement that will open up the
southern states. The bulk of the SSB contacts will be between 28.300 and
28.500 MHz. CW is busiest from 28.000 to 28.050 if you're so inclined. Make
contacts, put 'em in the log, have fun - that's what it's all about!
The open house is still on tap here at the KK1W QTH. If you would like to
join Mary, Eric, Matt and maybe Richard operating as WB1Z multi/single over
the weekend come on up! Any time during the day Saturday or Sunday is fine.
We have lots of room and you will have the opportunity to play radio, chat
and have fun. You can't beat that, can you?
'73 and look for WB1Z on the air (QRV) this weekend from Brimfield.
