David Favaro, tireless worker for hospital
by Daily Hampshire Gazette
ASHFIELD - David C. Favaro, 58, of 1594 West Road, passed away Friday
morning at home. Born Nov. 4, 1949, in Northampton, he was the son of
Ernestine (Shearer) and the late John A. Favaro Sr.
David was raised and educated in Northampton, graduating from Northampton
High School in 1967 and later from Greenfield Community College with a
degree in fire science. He joined the Northampton Fire Department and rose
through the ranks to deputy chief prior to his retirement in 2000.
After retirement, David kept active in the community, working and
volunteering at Cooley Dickinson Hospital. He was on the board of the Cooley
Dickinson Hospital Auxiliary, volunteering his time with fundraising for the
hospital. He drove and helped staff the Blood Mobile and also volunteered
within the hospital.
He was a radio enthusiast, both a ham radio operator and a collector of
vintage radios. David spent countless hours collecting radios and talking
with friends around the world on his short wave. He was an enthusiastic and
lifelong Red Sox fan, celebrating the highs and lows with our beloved Sox.
David had lived in Ashfield for more than 20 years, and he enjoyed country
living and the many people he had struck up friendships with.
He leaves his mother, Ernestine Favaro, of Northampton; his siblings, Kevin
Favaro, of Northampton, Nancy Favaro and her husband, Patrick Ott, of
Easthampton, John Favaro Jr., of Florence, Susan Favaro and her partner, Ron
Glidden, of Easthampton; and two nieces, Jamie Favaro, of New York City, and
Johanna Favaro, of Northampton, as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins
throughout the area.
David was predeceased by his father, a retired Northampton firefighter, John
A. Favaro Sr., in 2003. David also leaves many good friends and co-workers
at the Northampton Fire Department as well as Cooley Dickinson Hospital. He
will be missed.
Funeral services will be private with interment in St. Mary's Cemetery in
Northampton at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours.
The family asks that if people wish, they may give the gift of life in
David's memory by donating blood to the Cooley Dickinson Hospital Blood
Bank. People may also make donations to the Cooley Dickinson Hospital
Auxiliary, 30 Locust St., Northampton, MA 01060, or the Dakin Pioneer Valley
Humane Society, P.O. Box 319, So. Deerfield, MA 01373-0319. The Czelusniak
Funeral Home of Northampton has been entrusted with arrangements.
