Tom,
Perry Green in VEC obtained the W1A callsign from the FCC for our use as follows:
Sherwood (Woody) Lewis, W1SL, has arranged for an amateur radio special event
station, W1A, to operate
in recognization and celebration of the up-coming Transatlantic crossing and
year-long journey of the
Freedom Schooner Amistad. Leon KB1CQ, Harv K1PZS and I are assisting Woody with
the planning and setup
for this event. We are also looking forward to the help of other interested hams
willing to operate at W1A.
Info about the Amistad journey can be seen at
<http://www.amistadamerica.org/>http://www.amistadamerica.org/
The main operation of this special event will be set up at the Long Wharf Pier
in New Haven, CT.
This is the home port of Freedom Schooner Amistad, flag-ship of the State of
Connecticut. The ship
will be docked there prior to its departure on this historic voyage. We expect
to also have some
stations operating from remote QTHs using the same W1A callsign.
We plan to start operations on the HF bands Friday, June 15 at noontime and
continue operating Saturday and Sunday.
The frequencies we will plan to use should be on or near:
3675
7275
14275
21275
28475
Please distribute this announcement to the YCCC members asking them to look for
us and work us.
Also, Woody may get to be on the leg of the journey from Senegal to Sierra Leone.
73 de Don, K1IN
