In addition, the first in a series of Marine Spotter Classes is being
offered in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Information on the class follows
below:
Interested in learning how to develop your own self Marine weather
briefing to ensure safe decision making? This National Weather Service
course will help you sort out the abundance of weather information now
available and focus on just a few simple but important weather charts and
products. In addition, you will become familiar with National Weather
Service thresholds for Marine warnings and advisories, along with a
comprehensive explanation of Significant Wave Height.
Part two of the course will train Mariners in becoming an official
National Weather Service Marine Observer. The National Weather Service
office in Taunton, MA is looking to recruit volunteers from the marine
community to report real time weather observations at sea.
Your marine weather observation will be an important component in the
data stream which the forecaster analyzes. Your observation will provide
sea truth in that it tells us whether or not we are on track with our
forecasts and it will fill in the gaps between widely separated weather
reporting buoys and ships. This helps to identify weather conditions
that might otherwise go undetected.
The seasons first training session will be held at the following
location and time:
Thursday April 20th 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM: Pier 3, Fishermens Wharf, New
Bedford, MA
The training session is open to the public free of charge and is a 90
minute slide show, which covers interpreting basic weather charts and
products, along with training on reporting Marine weather observations.
The training stresses what types of weather and thresholds should be
reported. For those 16 and older, identification cards are handed out
along with a special phone number for reporting directly to the National
Weather Service, upon completion of the training.
Respectfully Submitted,
