As of the 4:00 a.m. – 0900 UTC intermediate advisory, extremely dangerous
Hurricane Rita, a powerful category 5 Hurricane, is closing in on the Texas
coast. It is therefore the plan of the Hurricane Watch Net to activate this
afternoon at 5:00 p.m. CDT – 2200 UTC, for the purpose of making contact
with stations in the affected area who will be available to provide weather
information, measured or observed, beginning Friday morning. Stations we
will be looking for include, but are not limited to, amateur radio stations
in the affected area, Red Cross Centers and Shelters, Salvation Army
Shelters, EOC’s, and Hospitals.

The Hurricane Watch Net will resume operations Friday morning 8:00 a.m. CDT
– 1300 UTC and remain active until 10:00 p.m. CDT – 0300 UTC or as long as
the 20-meter band is closes, which ever comes first.

In the meantime, please stay tuned to this webpage for the latest updates of
our activation plans.
