Greetings
We (ARRL) are asking agencies to start posting their needs on our
"Volunteers Needed" clearing house database on the ARRL Web site (link
at the right when you go to www.arrl.org).
Then prospective vols can match themselves up.
Dunno if this has happened yet in this particular instance, but I was on
the phone today with the SMs and SECs from LA and MS and w/ Greg, W4OZK,
who's handling the ham radio intake at the former Kmart (or whatever it
is) in Montgomery, AL, and no one mentioned anything about needing
additional HF ops or gear.
In fact, the main HF net, the West Gulf ARES Emergency Net (3.873/7.285)
is securing tomorrow because there's so little traffic and VHF-UHF
repeaters plus conventional telecoms are coming back in a lot of places.
In any event, yes, you should be letting your home SECs know if you are
going to deploy, perhaps even if you plan to volunteer. And no one
should self-deploy in any event.
Sorry I missed the HCRA meeting (again), but I just got home. N1ND
showed me his VFB presentation earlier today, however.
73, Rick

Hi everyone.
I just got off the phone with Allen Pitts, who is the ARRL's CorpCom
guy (he's the one that's forced to talk to us reporters all the time).
Allen is currently working out of a former K-Mart in Louisiana.
In addition to the VSAT stuff that a lot of us have been doing, he
said that HF gear and operators for that HF gear is urgently needed.
He said that they are stretched very thin and they have some areas
including at least two hospitals that are totally without
communications.
At this point, I'm not sure who is coordinating this, but I suspect
that the Red Cross can tell us.
However, if you are, or if you know anyone, who would be willing to
deploy to the Katrina area with HF gear in hand, they need the help.
If you let your ARES managers know, I think they can pass the message
along. Hope I'm right here.
