[HCRA] Fwd: [BARC-List] Re announcement at Eastern MA ARRL

I'm not a fan either and my initial reaction was pretty much the same as
Dan's, but I'd advise people to see the video first and consider his
remark in context. It was a definite gaffe, but somehow I doubt it
really reflects his feelings regarding the value of Amateur Radio.

Gov Romney was attempting to make a case that the Commonwealth had its
act together regarding being able to maintain comms if the grid were to
go down, and the moderator of the discussion broke in and asked, "So,
you don't see us getting down to ham operators?"

Already sounding a bit under the gun at that point, Romney said
dismissively (and perhaps a bit peeved at the interruption), "No, we
don't need to deal with ham operators. We have power systems available .
. . "

Given the circumstances, I wouldn't overreact to this. Unfortunately,
some will feel the need to write impolite and/or rude letters or e-mails
to the governor, and, frankly, that sort of thing is even more damaging
to Amateur Radio than anything he may have thoughtlessly said.

Some of the other participants, including a fellow from The Salvation
Army, specifically mentioned Amateur Radio in a positive light later on
in the discussion.
