Dear HCRA,
A nation wide effort is underway to reduce unnecessary APRS traffic and save bandwidth. Please read the following. Basically, in a dense area like Western Ma. You don't need a zillion hops to get your signal through. Also, getting digi'ed half way across the country is pointless. As many local APRS internet gateway systems will put you out across the web so your pals in Ca. can still see where you are via internet. FYI, I'm running a Digi and Internet gateway to cover the dead spot around Wilbraham Mountain that Mt. Tom does not get very well.
Please pass this on to the Mount Tom club. I do not know who controls the APRS for them. At the very least they should read the article and decide for themselves if this is a worthwhile change. The change will actually reduce collisions and improve throughput.
FYI my unproto for the digi / gateway station is APRS,WIDE2-2
My mobile tracker (Tiny Trac) is RELAY,WIDE2-2

Larry, we need you to change your digi setup to something similar to the info below. Obviously you don't wan to use the CT param. You would want MA I guess. Also you should read this http://web.usna.navy.mil/~bruninga/aprs/fix14439.html and follow the info presented here , http://www.ew.usna.edu/~bruninga/aprs/kpc3+WIDEn.txt, to config your TNC. They are trying to clean up the APRS network. Also anything you can do to get MT Tom to change their parameters would be appreciated. They should read the same stuff and make the changes ASAP. W1GTT has all the necessary info as he coordinates this stuff for us in CT.
Trying to cut down on the excessive QRM from neighboring states etc. So far I've changed W1GTT-15, W1AAA-15 and N1SAX-15 has incorporated changes to his UI-View32 digi and the network is getting less data passing thru. These are some recommendations from WB4APR but tweaked for UI-View32 users.Check out his site. I see you have a link to his pages.
Give these recommendations a try. If you have a need for further tweaking for excessive WIDEN-N paths I'll forward them to you after you make the changes.
THIS IS FOR UI-VIEW32 DIGIPEATER SYSOPS ONLY! IT DOES NOT APPLY TO NORMAL
UI-VIEW32 USERS.
This is a "how to" posting, it is NOT a discussion of the merits of the new
paradigm. If you want to discuss the merits of the new paradigm,
1. Shut down UI-View32
2. Make a backup copy of uiview32.ini. (It is in your main uiview32
directory)
3. Edit uiview32.ini (in the main uiview32 directory as shown below:
(Make sure to use a TEXT editor, not Microsoft Word or any other word
processor that puts formatting commands in the text!) Notepad works fine.
[DIGI_OPTIONS]
DIGI_ENABLED=TRUE
UI_ONLY=TRUE
ALIAS_SUBSTITUTION=TRUE
DUPE_SUPPESS_SECONDS=30
ALIAS=(YOUR DIGI CALL),RELAY
UIFLOOD=WIDE (CHANGE THIS to UIFLOOD=CT)
UITRACE=TRACE (CHANGE THIS to UITRACE=WIDE)
WIDEN-N=TRUE
TRACEN-N=TRUE
SUBST_ALIAS=(YOUR DIGI CALL)
EXCLUDED=""
[DIGI_ROUTES]
1=1
4. Save your changed file.
5. Restart UI-View32
You will now digipeat with decrementing and dupe checking, the new WIDEn-n
and SSn-n paradigm. (If you don't know what the SSn-n part of the paradigm
is, don't worry, you need do nothing...just check the box and forget about
it. In other words, if you don't know what it is and does, you don't need to
know at this point, just set it up the way shown and it will work
automagically)
