[HCRA] WWII Radios

Your best bet might be to try to slip the guts of a little FRS (Family
Radio Service) radio inside the WW II walkie-talkie box--if there's
room. Getting gear that old up and running (could one still locate the
necessary batteries?) could be quite a challenge--aside from the fact
that they'd likely need to be licensed. One can't just "put them on the
air" without regard to what frequency they're on. Undoubtedly they're
designed to operate on some military frequency, and these days, it
wouldn't be a smart idea to just show up on one of those without
authorization.
FRS units are dirt cheap, run off readily available batteries, and have
a range of maybe a half mile or more--depending on the unit and the
antenna connected to it. With a little work, one could probably wire up
one of these to operate with the PTT switch on the old walkie talkie.
Maybe one would fit inside the battery compartment.
As a vintage radio collector (of sorts), I'd also be loath to
drastically modify military radios of this vintage and thereby destroy
their antique value.
