Matthew,
You do not need to take the tests at the same time, however, you will need
to take them within 365 days of each other.
As for learning Code, two items come to mind.
1) WB6NOA code tapes (which used to be at Rat Shack) are quite good. They
build in a logical manner starting with E (dit) and T (dah) and working
through the alphabet.
2) Once you get the basic alphabet relatively down, meaning you have a few
letters you need to clean up but you can at least recognize most of the more
often used ones, try sending with a straight key and an oscillator. At a
meeting of my ham club down here the other night we had a morse code keyer
night. That got some of us talking on what we did to pass the test. I for
one, being a nerd, used to have National Geographic maps of various places
on my walls in my room. I would use the straight key and oscillator and send
the names of foreign places. China is the best map, with tons of x's, q's
and words that seem to be random groups of letters.
This is how I did it. Once you get that you should be able to pass the 5
wpm. From there its just a matter of getting on the air and speeding up.
