Yessir! All correct information, but let me just add in that the IRLP
node 7270 also
transmits with a PL of 114.8, so you can also use tone-squelch on this
frequency (the
147.105 repeater in Palmer also transmits a PL).
You don't need to have the PL set on recieve (tone-squelch) to hear
the transmissions.
If you DO have it set however, you will ONLY hear transmissions from the
node, and not
any of the "transient" signals that Rick spoke of below.
You MUST have the "TONE" set on transmit, however, to open the
squelch on the IRLP
radio.

Please feel free to use the IRLP node, that's why its there, and
thanks for asking
about its use, I"m sure there were other users with the same question.

Other things to remember about using the IRLP:

1) You must ID as prescribed by FCC rules, even if only using DTMF tones to
turn the node on or off. If you are turning on the node only to
listen, then it
makes sense to ID first while turning it on, and you are done, at
least until you
xmit again, IF you xmit again.

2) When sending DTMF tones, you need to key and hold the mike and then
send all your tones in one transmission.

3) You are on a simplex node, remember that you may not hear other
local users,
and they may not hear you, but the node (and therefore the remote
station) can.
If you hear the node ID with only a "Kx1x IRLP node", and no message
after,
then it is in "connected" mode, and may be in use by another local user.
There is no courtesy tone, or easy way to determine if you are
reaching the
IRLP node without turning it on, or sending #411. (#411 will give
you the
current state of the node, either "link off" or "connected to node
####")
(( Remember, you still need to ID within 10 minutes, even if just
sending
        a #411 )).
Also, because it is a simplex node, be sure that your radio is
not changing
your transmit frequency, as you would with a repeater in DUPLEX mode.

Kerchunking the IRLP node doesn't give you any indication of
anything.

4) Always leave a 2 second pause after the remote station has unkeyed,
to allow
other users to jump in and/or log off of the IRLP system.

5) Always wait 1 to 2 seconds after keying up, before you begin
speaking. Otherwise,
some of the beginning of your transmission may be lost by internet
delay and the time
it takes down-stream repeaters to open.

6) Though connections will time out in 4 minutes to regular nodes, or 1
hr. for reflectors,
it is common courtesy to manually turn the node off when you are
through. If you
happen to lose connectivity to the node while it is still on, no big
deal, it will time
out. To disconnect from a node, press #73 when the IRLP node is NOT
transmitting.

I hope you enjoy using the IRLP node. Feel free to post questions here
on the
HCRA list, or directly to me.

'73 de Kx1x,
JPise
